Mary Corse | Light Painting - Grid Series
Mary Corse is attributed to the emergence of the Southern California Light and Space Movement in the early 1960's. Captivated by perceptual phenomena and the materiality of light, Corse's practice of monochromatic grids, lines, and forms create a spatial and temporal experience. The included work "Light Painting- Grid Series" represents Corse's early incorporation of glass microspheres, a defining medium employed throughout her career. Previously used in industrial applications, Corse would combine these microspheres within her gestural brushwork, creating a refraction of light that brilliantly transforms contingent upon the ambient enviroment and one's viewpoint.
This monumental canvas was included in the 1971 Guggenheim Exhibition “Ten Young Artist” which included fellow artists Guy Dill, Michael Singer, and Goerge Trakas. Corse’s work has been included in historically significant group exhibitions, including Pacific Standard Time: Crosscurrents in L.A., Painting and Sculpture, 1950-1970 at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (2011); and Phenomenal: California Light and Space at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2011). In 2018, the Whitney Museum of American Art organized the solo exhibition A Survey in Light. Her work is held in numerous public collections worldwide, including Fondation Beyeler, Basel; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; The Menil Collection, Houston; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Whitney Museum of Art.
