WORKS ON PAPER II: Work by Peter Alexander, Mel Bochner, Kelsey Brookes, Manny Farber, Thomas Glassford, Frederick Hammersley, Joseph Huppert, Francesco Longenecker and Ryan McGinness, is a mix of media with the artists using the common material of paper.
Peter Alexander uses gouache to emulate the properties of resin in his drawings from 2013. Mel Bochner’slarge-scale paintings on handmade paper are powerful word pieces from his “Thesaurus” series. Kelsey Brookes’ new set of prints called Triple Happiness are a traditional letter press print, and triple the pleasure. The large-scale collaged paintings by Manny Farber from 1960-1975 are important predecessors to the development of the Farber’s painting style. Thomas Glassford incorporates zippers into his paper pieces, which are full of color and depth. A set of three Frederick Hammersley lithographs from 1950 are small intricate geometric pieces that reside in the original artist-made frames. Joseph Huppert’srichly dense graphite drawings calls out the viewers attention to perception. Francesco Longeneckermulti-layered glassine and mylar ink and graphite drawings depict fragmented dreamlike landscapes. In Ryan McGinness’ lithographs printed from stones carry the unique iconography that the artist has made a staple in his oeuvre.
