Adam Belt | Longview: Quint Contemporary Art: 7547 Girard Avenue

Quint Contemporary Art (QCA) is pleased to present ADAM BELT: LONGVIEW, a solo exhibition of sculptural and installation work by Adam Belt. This is the second solo exhibition at QCA for the artist. The exhibition opens on Saturday, September 14th with a public reception from 6 to 8PM, the artist will be in attendance.

Adam Belt’s new work explores the roots of his artistic practice, which include open natural landscapes and phenomenology. This new body of work is inspired by the sublime and nature; they are intuitive pieces akin to the work of Anish Kapoor. The intimate pieces reflect on natural phenomenon and conceptual thought. Belt says:

“My artistic practice as a religious vocation continues to evolve as an open ended prospect, heavily influenced by the monastic tradition and contemplative prayer.”

In exploring the sublime, Belt notes two important points: the first being a presentation of absence. The second point comes from a quote in the publication, The Sublime from the “Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art” series by Simon Morley which states: “this anthology explores the range of recent artistic theory and practice that attempts to articulate such moments of mute encounter with all that exceeds our comprehension.”

The idea of the “mute encounter” encapsulates the open-ended experience in Belt’s work. Like in past works, Belt continues to have interest in phenomena, the cosmos, religion, time, and wonder. Belt’s work continues to manifest the unseen and illicit wonder of contemplation by defying expectations while interrupting the rapid pace of human existence.

Adam Belt received his BFA from the University of San Diego and completed his MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 2001. His work was included in the 2010 Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego exhibition Here Not There, which highlighted the rich San Diego art scene. In 2011, Belt was awarded the San Diego Art Prize in the Emerging Artist category. Belt’s work belongs in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Belt currently lives and works in Carlsbad, CA.
