Horizon | Group Exhibition: Quint Contemporary Art: 7547 Girard Avenue

Quint Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of our summer group exhibition, HORIZON. The concept for this exhibition was to invite artists who have made works for the Murals of La Jolla project to recommend an artist they feel is underrepresented or emerging to be included in the exhibition, highlighting the work of artists who are admired by their established peers. This is the first exhibition of this kind at Quint Gallery. The opening reception on Saturday, July 26th from 6-8pm is open to the public and some of the artists will be in attendance.

We are often asked: How do we choose new artists to show at the gallery? Our answer: Usually we become interested in new artist’s work by listening to other artist’s recommendations. When an artist we respect says "you need to see so and so's work," our ears perk up. Twenty years ago, UCSD professor/artist Louis Hock mentioned a student of his, Roman De Salvo; who 5 years later mentioned a student of his, Adam Belt, and so forth. We have represented de Salvo’s and Belt’s work for many years now. Most of our artist relationships came about this way. Therefore, we are very excited about the recommendations made by the thirteen participating Murals of La Jolla artists. The style, subject matter and technique vary vastly between each artist, but the one aligning factor is the quality of the work and the impact each has on the gallery aesthetic.

HORIZON came about after many discussions at the gallery regarding organizing a summer group show. In an effort to do something interesting and beneficial to the artistic community of San Diego, we partnered with the Murals of La Jolla to bring together this incredible group of artists:

James Enos is an architect and artist whose sculpture is made of building materials, and skinned with found images from magazines. They act as remainders from architectural projects lost and reminders of popular cultural taboos. He currently lives and works in San Diego, CA. 

Rashell George’s collages are taken from found imagery and nature, creating layered contemplative images, while the drawing component adds photorealistic representations. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Joseph Huppert creates beautifully detailed graphite drawings that analyze form and utilize light. He currently lives and works in San Diego, CA.

Greg Lindquist is an artist and environmental advocate, whose paintings bring light to corporate (coal ash spills) and natural (oil seeping) pollution of rivers and lakes. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Aspen Mays is a photographer who recently completed a Fulbright Fellowship in Chile, from which the photographs of the stars and sun were created. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. 

Jessica McCambly is an artist interested in the exploration of different forms and materials; having studied painting and drawing, her work blurs the lines of painting and sculpture. She currently lives and works in San Diego, CA.

Susan Metzger is a painter who captures the complexities of landscape through a distilled style of painting. She currently lives and works in Washington, Maine.

John O’Connor’s large-scale drawings are colorful portrayals of ideas about social class and artificial intelligence. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. 

Heather Rasmussen is a photographer whose work is composed of found objects and body parts to create a sense of anthropomorphism and disembodiment at the same time. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. 

Michael Sitaras is a plein air painter documenting his family, friends and the places he lives. He currently lives and works in Encinitas, CA where he is a priest at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. 

Caragh Thuring’s painting is a large-scale abstract piece that references architectural components and found objects to create imaginatively surreal landscapes. She currently lives and works in London UK. 

Cindy Tower’s video and drawings for Nest Egg are documents of a performance that created an installation that act as an indictment of the corruption in the financial and political sectors. Tower is a graduate of University of California, San Diego and she currently lives and works in St. Louis, MO.

Lisa Young’s photographs and video utilize simplicity and the chance movement of found objects to masterfully highlight the poetics of space. She currently lives and works in Providence, RI where she teaches in the Photography department at RISD. 

ABOUT MURALS OF LA JOLLA

Murals of La Jolla, founded by the La Jolla Community Foundation, is a project of the Athenaeum. Murals of La Jolla was conceived in 2010 as a means to enhance the civic character of the community by commissioning public art projects on private property throughout La Jolla.
