Monique van Genderen

May 12 - Jun 12, 2023 ONE | 1955 Julian Avenue
Overview
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 13, 6-8pm

This month, ONE presents a 2013 work by Monique van Genderen, preceding her upcoming solo exhibition at the gallery’s La Jolla space in June 2023.

Monique van Genderen’s practice includes large-scale abstractions characterized
by expressive gestures and dynamic compositions. Her painterly language may be
understood through her experimentation with color, surface, finish, and her unique
brushstrokes, suggesting intimate intersections of abstraction with forms that
convey memories of concrete thought. Each work communicates the process of
painting itself, using the canvas to create a sense of expansiveness, depth, and
movement. In this work, the viewer may consider the interplay of layered
translucent hues and the recognizable wood-grain textures alongside the tension
and balance of biomorphic forms.

Monique van Genderen was born in Vancouver, Canada and raised in Huntington
Beach, CA. She received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts,
Valencia, CA, and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California, San
Diego. She is the recipient of a Project Commission for Murals for La Jolla; the
Chiaro Award, Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA; Federal Courthouse
Building Art Commission for the GSA, Arts and Architecture Program, Harrisburg,
PA; and the West Hollywood 1% for the Arts Public Art Commission. In 2006, van
Genderen participated in Art Unlimited, Art Basel 37, curated by Samuel Keller,
