Kenneth Capps | Prism / Index
Coffee Reception with the artist: Saturday December 10, 11am-1pm
Quint Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of sculptures by Kenneth Capps.
From both his Prism and Index series, which he began in 2011 and completed in 2012, the works on view include six galvanized steel structures differentiated by the negative space in each piece.
The Prism pieces are an optical distortion of physical space produced by two cuts crossing along the four sides of each structure. In the Index works, rectilinear cuts provide an outline and viewpoint into the interior space. Together in both series, there is a dialogue between the exterior and the interior negative space of the vertical forms. The steel cut-out work originated in the 1970s in two-dimensional wall pieces. Both the two and three-dimensional works examine the space between the known and the unknown.
Kenneth Capps received his MFA at the University of California, San Diego in 1975, during which his work was acquired by the Storm King Art Center in upstate New York. His work is now featured in permanent collections internationally, including the the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and the Port of San Diego, Bayside Park in Chula Vista, CA; the Palm Springs Art Museum; the Oakland Museum Of California; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; and the Alfred Schmela Sculpture Park in Dusseldorf, Germany, among many others. Capps has received several grants and awards, including two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a Pollock/Krasner foundation grant.
