Ruth Pastine | ONE 2-3-4
Quint Gallery’s ONE is pleased to present recent oil paintings by Southern California-based artist Ruth Pastine. Known for her minimalist color field paintings informed by the interaction of color and the concept of simultaneous contrast, this selection of work furthers Pastine’s investigation of the perception of color in the context of light and space. Working in series is an essential aspect of Pastine’s creative process, focused on the austerity of the three complementary color systems which, although seemingly finite, access limitless possibility.
This exhibition also marks a shift in the operating model of ONE as a Quint satellite space. ONE opened in July 2020 to adapt to the climate forged by COVID-19 closures -- as an appointment-only space where visitors could sit and appreciate a single, monumental work of art at a time, in a private, isolated environment. Now, as most facets of life have returned to full capacity, so too is Quint Gallery. The space at 7722 Girard Avenue will adapt again, and shift its model into a more traditional gallery space showing one-person and small group shows.
The new program starts August 12th with new works by Ruth Pastine. ONE 2-3-4 consists of a diptych, a triptych of paper works on board on panel, a quartet of oil paintings on canvas on beveled panels, and a single wall work which may be seen from outside the gallery.
Born in New York City, Pastine earned a B.F.A. from Cooper Union in 1987. She was awarded a travel and independent research grant to attend the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, Netherlands where she lived from 1987 to 1988. Pastine later attended Hunter College where she received an M.F.A. in 1993. Ruth Pastine has exhibited widely in the United States and Japan and Pastine’s works are included in numerous public and corporate collections, including the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; SFMOMA San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; MCASD Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles; MOAH Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA; Brookfield Properties, Ernst & Young Plaza, Los Angeles; AXA Art, Cologne, Germany; Qualcomm, San Diego; CIM Group Headquarters, Los Angeles, among others.
