Carlos Castro-Arias | The Awaken King

Aug 26 - Sep 15, 2020 7722 Girard Avenue
Overview

This piece is part of Carlos Castro’s series entitled Mythstories which explores the relationship between Myth and history. The series consists of large-scale woven tapestries that illustrate contemporary myths by interlacing imagery from medieval tapestries and twenty-first-century news media.

“Myth is much more important and true than history. History is just journalism and you know how reliable that is. Myth really captures the true essence and consciousness of the collective soul.” - Joseph Campbell

Carlos Castro Arias was born in Bogota, Colombia. His interdisciplinary practice departs from the appropriation of historical images and the formal and symbolic re-contextualization of found objects. Castro’s work explores elements of the individual and collective identity and aims to bring to light muted histories and ignored points of view.

Castro is also a musician and educator. He is an associate professor at San Diego State University.

Castro lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota.
