Overview

Elinor Carucci’s second solo exhibition at the gallery features photographs from the artist’s newly published monograph, Closer. Among the photographer’s recent honors are the 2001 ICP Infinity Award for Young Photographer and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002.

Carucci has received critical acclaim for her family portraits exploring intimacy in multiple senses. The artist frequently employs the extreme close-up to suggest a lack of emotional distance, while also using her fully or partially nude body or those of her family members to evoke the sexual meaning of the word.  Many pieces seem to suggest the camera’s intrusion on a private moment, such as a hug or a lone figure surveying a cool blue pool. Saturated with color and full of dramatic contrasts of dark and light, the artist’s work is equally rich in psychological content. Carucci offers up the relationships between parent and child or husband and wife for close scrutiny.

Elinor Carucci was born in Jerusalem and received her B.F.A. from the Bezalel Academy of Art. She has had solo exhibitions at the Haifa Museum of Contemporary Art, Israel; The Prague House of Photography, Czech Republic; and Fotographie Forum, Frankfurt, Germany. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; and The Museum of Israeli Art, Jerusalem.
