Overview

Quint Contemporary Art is pleased to announce its fourth solo exhibition for artist Roy McMakin featuring new drawings, a painting and furniture. Roy McMakin is known as both an artist and a designer and has staked his claim in the overlap of these disciplines. He combines form and function, furniture and visual art, to produce hybrid objects of clean, sensuous surface with humorous underpinnings. His work often plays with scale and language, inviting both visceral response and conceptual contemplation. McMakin’s drawings form an important bridge between his dual roles. Delicate tangles of line ensnare cabinets or domestic items in a frenzy of energy. In some instances, a variety of objects are recorded and in others, for instance, a single cup is repeatedly traced and scrutinized from every angle. At times bubbles or bursts of text appear in these finely rendered mental meanderings, nostalgically recalling teenage graffiti comics.

Born in Wyoming, Roy McMakin attended the Portland Museum of Art School in Oregon before completing both his B.A. and M.F.A. at the University of California, San Diego. A Door Meant as Adornment, a mid-career retrospective of McMakin’s work, is on view at MOCA at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles until June 29. McMakin has enjoyed solo shows at the Seattle Art Museum, Marc Foxx Gallery in Los Angeles and Feature, Inc. in New York. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, La Jolla; and the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.
