Jean Lowe | Grand Tour
Quint Contemporary Art is pleased to announce its fifth exhibition by San Diego based artist Jean Lowe. The show opens with a reception for the artist on Saturday, June 25, from 6-8 pm and continues through July 30, 2005.
Jean Lowe is well known for her lush, colorful paintings that juxtapose humor, environmental concerns and historical references. Ms. Lowe's exhibition will include a salon style hanging of new paintings depicting modern strip malls with their cookie-cutter architectural sensibility of parking lots and chain-stores against backgrounds of ancient and grand, 19th Century romantic landscapes. Also included in the installation will be a sculpture of a life-size baby grand piano with it's lid open revealing ice cold beer and pop, further emphasizing the theme of cultural decay.
On exhibit in the second gallery will be a number of papier-mache plates from her Gastronomique series. Lowe's work explores the exploited, whether animal, human or landscape. In the series, Lowe focuses on the destruction of animals by painting eyes of animals we use for food; cows, pigs, turkeys and sheep, staring at us from the center of the plates, reflecting fright and resignation.
Ms. Lowe is presently a visiting lecture at the University of California, San Diego where she received her Masters of Fine Arts in 1988. Recent one-person exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and Kemper Museum in Kansas City.
