Quint Contemporary Art (QCA) is pleased to present ROY MCMAKIN: Some Drawings and a Table, a solo exhibition by Roy McMakin and WORKS ON PAPER II: Work by Peter Alexander, Mel Bochner, Kelsey Brookes, Manny Farber, Thomas Glassford, Frederick Hammersley, Joseph Huppert and Ryan McGinness, a group exhibition of artist studies, acrylic painting, zippers, cuts, collage and prints. This is the seventh exhibition at QCA for artist/designer McMakin who will be exhibiting new drawings accompanied by a table. This is the second summer series presenting work on paper. The exhibition opens on Saturday, August 3rd with a public reception from 6 to 8PM.
ROY MCMAKIN: Some Drawings and a Table features a series of drawings from 2011-2013. The drawings continue Roy’s exploration of furniture and architecture as a repository of human connections and emotions. To be displayed among the drawings is a new table designed by McMakin.
Roy McMakin is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego where he received his BA and MFA degrees. Roy created a small furniture company as part of his art practice in San Diego 25 years ago, and it continues out of his Seattle studio. He also runs a design firm called Domestic Furniture that operates out of Seattle, WA and San Diego. New sculptural work was recently featured in an exhibition called “Against the Grain” at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Recent commissions include an artwork installation for the San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 revitalization, which will be unveiled in late 2013 as well as a commission for the new San Diego Public Library. McMakin currently splits his time between Seattle, WA and San Diego, CA.
WORKS ON PAPER II: Work by Peter Alexander, Mel Bochner, Kelsey Brookes, Manny Farber, Thomas Glassford, Frederick Hammersley, Joseph Huppert, Francesco Longenecker and Ryan McGinness, is a mix of media with the artists using the common material of paper.
Peter Alexander uses gouache to emulate the properties of resin in his drawings from 2013. Mel Bochner’s large-scale paintings on handmade paper are powerful word pieces from his “Thesaurus” series. Kelsey Brookes’ new set of prints called Triple Happiness are a traditional letter press print, and triple the pleasure. The large-scale collaged paintings by Manny Farber from 1960-1975 are important predecessors to the development of the Farber’s painting style. Thomas Glassford incorporates zippers into his paper pieces, which are full of color and depth. A set of three Frederick Hammersley lithographs from 1950 are small intricate geometric pieces that reside in the original artist-made frames. Joseph Huppert’s richly dense graphite drawings calls out the viewers attention to perception. Francesco Longenecker multi-layered glassine and mylar ink and graphite drawings depict fragmented dreamlike landscapes. In Ryan McGinness’ lithographs printed from stones carry the unique iconography that the artist has made a staple in his oeuvre.
